How Your Money Mindset Shapes Financial Habits

We’ve got spreadsheets, savings apps, and even the old school envelope system making a comeback (yes, that’s not a new thing), but how often do we actually stop to look at our money mindset? So, What Is Money Mindset?

Your money mindset is how you think and feel, and emotional reactions you’ve developed around money.

It’s shaped by:

  • Your upbringing (how money was talked about (or not) in your family).
  • Education level
  • Your own past experiences.
  • Friends & partner influence on spending/saving habits
  • Cultural or societal beliefs (“e.g. in some cultures talking about money is rude,” etc.)
  • Gender expectations around earning, spending, or handling money
  • And plenty more.

Why It Matters (More Than You Think)

Even with all the right tools, a budget, a financial plan, an accountant etc.. your mindset can still trip you up.

It shows up in how you spend (or avoid spending), whether you save consistently or put it off, and even how you price your work or ask to be paid. It affects whether you check your bank balance regularly or avoid it out of stress, and whether you see money as a tool, a threat, or something you’re “bad at.” From impulse purchases to undercharging clients, the beliefs you hold about money are often behind the scenes, shaping how you act long before the numbers hit the spreadsheet.

I’m not a money mindset coach, and to be totally honest, I didn’t even know that was a thing until recently. I came across one through a business network, and some of her social media posts got me thinking about how I view and relate to money.

I’ve always felt I had a good relationship with money, but looking back, that probably comes from growing up during a time when my parents were still getting back on their feet from the ’80s recession. I originally studied law, but during the Celtic Tiger downturn, I changed to accounting, drawn by its stability. Only two things in life are certain: death and taxes. I chose the latter and ultimately became a tax advisor.

That’s when it hit me…

Because managing money well is about more than just maths. It’s about how you think and feel about money. If you find yourself stuck, overwhelmed, or repeating the same habits in spite of yourself, maybe the numbers aren’t the problem. Maybe it’s the story around them. Now that might be a tough realisation, but it’s a powerful one!

Again, I’m not a money mindset coach myself, I’m an accountant, but if this resonates with you and you think mindset might be where you’re getting stuck, I’d be happy to point you in the right direction.

If you need an accountant, reach out too!
